Label CopyTsuji Kako's father, a yuzen (paste-resist) textile artist in Kyoto, encouraged his son to study painting and Kako might have been involved in textile design as a young man. Adept at various painting styles, from Shijo to Kano, it is the Rinpa style that characterizes Kako's mature paintings. Especially admired for his bold use of color and abstract, modernist compositions, he is considered an important painter of the Nihonga movement. Kako worked during a time when many artists were exploring new, yet distinctively Japanese, modes of individual expression.
