Label CopyDong Bangda received the jinshi degree in 1733 and eventually served as president of the Board of Rites under the Qianlong emperor (r. 1736-95). One of his responsibilities involved working with the commission that compiled three major catalogs of the imperial art collection. Dong¿s firsthand experience with the collection led him to copy a number of the paintings by earlier masters.
This small album presents eight intimate landscapes in the orthodox style. Leaf one, shown here, depicts a scholar and his servant, who carries a wrapped qin (zither), walking toward a temple.
