Label CopyThis courtesan of the Genroku era (1688–1704) is one of eleven famous courtesans with the name Takao, perhaps the sixth, who was known for her writing. Gazing at the summer dawn moon, Takao yearns for her lover, who has recently left the Yoshiwara pleasure quarters. The plaintive call of the hototogisu (cuckoo) is associated with loneliness.(“Moon," curated by Ellen Avril and presented at the Johnson Museum August 25, 2018-January 13, 2019)
