Label CopyThe village of Chofu in Musashi province was located along one of the six Jewel Rivers, immortalized in a series of poems. Fujiwara no Teika (1162–1241) composed the poem for the river at Chofu:
At Tatsukuri morning dewdrops
lie in shining strings
on cloth spread out for bleaching
Jewel River village
Yoshitoshi made several prints in this series that refer to the sound of pounding cloth in the moonlight, with its sad associations of a woman waiting for her distant husband to return.
