While artists traditionally offer images of the female body as one of almost impossible perfection, Smith presents it as imperfect yet beautiful. Worm offers us an unedited version of the body’s sexuality accompanied by decorative elements culturally relegated to the female realm, such as the cutout flowers attached to the print with string and the background cutout reminiscent of folded snowflakes made by children. This is an elaborate and demanding work, printed in an edition of fifty by four printers working with the artist at Universal Limited Art Editions (ULAE) in New York. ("Imprint/ In Print," curated by Nancy E. Green with assistance from Christian Waibel '17 and presented at the Johnson Museum August 8 - December 20, 2015)
