Near the trees are two enjoined thatched-roof open pavillions perched on pilings set into the riverbank. Two men are sitting inside the upper pavillion engaged in conversation; two attendants can be seen below in the lower pavillion. A rustic fence and gate mark the foreground of the painting. Inscribed and sealed by the artist with a couplet: "In front of the gate/ fallen leaves float on autumn waters/ Outside the fence/ the mynah bird brings forth the setting sun." (Tr.
