Later he moved to Kyoto, where his artistic style developed under the combined influences of both the realist painter Maruyama Okyo and the Nanga artist Yosa Buson. As a priest of the Jodo sect of Buddhism, Gessen’s practice of painting and poetry were deployed to raise support for the upkeep of his temple, Chion-in. In this gentle landscape, a group of scholars cross a bridge, about to make their way between large willow trees and up a steep path to visit a friend, who awaits their arrival at the gate to his mountain abode.
