The front depicts the monk Xuanzang accompanied by the Monkey Deity (Sun Wukong) with the Pigman (Zhu Wuneng) and River Dieties (Sha Wujing). The calligraphy suggests that the scene depicted is from a chapter in which the monkey deity fights the White Bone Spirit, who desired to eat the flesh of Xuanzang to attain longevity. 
The reverse depicts in calligraphy the famous novel Journey to the West and legend that the Tang Dynasty Buddhist monk Xuanzang who travelled to the “Western Regions”, that is India, to obtain sacred texts and returned after many trials and much suffering.  The story tells of Sun Wukong who follows Xuanzang to India to protect him. He fights the White Bone Spirit three times. Zhu Wuneng and Sha Wujing also go along to protect the monk. It was made in the spring of year Kuihai (1983).
