Label CopyDove grew up in Geneva, New York, graduated from Cornell in 1903, and moved to New York City. His first solo show, held at Stieglitz’s 291 Gallery in 1912, highlighted his characteristic nonrepresentational style. These watercolors were made while he was living on Long Island, drawing inspiration from the surrounding town and landscape. Although he still painted and drew in his signature abstract style, Dove’s art from this period reflects his aspiration to work at “the point where abstraction and reality meet.” The Johnson Museum has rich holdings of paintings and watercolors by Dove many given by his family members, including twenty-one small tempera studies given by Dove’s son William in 1980.
