Label CopyGrandson of Kano Eitoku and one of the prominent members of the conservative Kano school of artists, Tanyu was, at the age of fifteen, named official painter to the Tokugawa shogunate. A versatile painter who could produce grand, large-scale works illustrating Confucian themes for a castle interior, or colorful compositions depicting the fury of battle, he was equally adept at intimate suibokuga (black-ink) painting. In this example, Tanyu sensitively distills the landscape elements to their essence to convey the serenity of a quiet winter landscape.
