Ryoryosai Koshuku was a Zen Buddhist monk and tea master who named the Raku tea bowl “Old Pine Tree.” It is common to provide poetic names to treasured tea utensils. After enjoying a bowl of tea, guests will customarily ask the host if a bowl has a poetic name.
