Label CopyBorn in Bandung, Tino Djumini was adopted from an orphanage and raised in The Netherlands where he pursued his education, completing a degree in audiovisual media and photography at the academy of Fine Arts in Arnhem. He returned to Java in 2002 and began using photography to investigate his own identity as an Indonesian, clearly questioning the balance of his life between Indonesia and The Netherlands.
Using a classical style of portraiture, his methodology behind the series Kerebat/Relatives points to more challenging questions about being Indonesian. He photographed an incredibly diverse cross-section of families with the aim of creating a sense of his contemporary culture--artists, farmers, journalists, religious leaders, refugees, and aristocrats--that collectively provide a window into the rich, dynamic, and complicated diversity of modern Indonesia.
