Label CopyA student of Kiyokata Kaburagi (1878–1973), Kasamatsu Shiro was enjoying success as a painter of landscapes when his work was noticed by a Tokyo publisher, Watanabe Shozaburo.
In 1919, Shiro began designing woodblock prints and
continued to work for Watanabe for several decades, producing romantic landscapes that became especially attractive to Western collectors.
In the late 1950s, Shiro struck out on his own and began carving and printings his designs in the manner of the sosaku hanga (creative print) movement artists.
