Label CopyBorn in Anhui Province, Liu Guosong moved to Taiwan in 1949 and studied painting at National Taiwan Normal University. One of the co-founder’s of Taiwan’s experimental Fifth Moon Group (Wuyue Huahui), Liu first focused on abstract oil painting, but in 1963 he turned to working in ink on paper. His novel approach is exemplified here in his wielding of the brush sideways, rejecting the use of the center tip, and in employing a thick paper from which he pulled individual fibers to expose streaks of white within the inked areas. Liu enjoyed a long and successful career of teaching art that included appointments at the Chinese University of Hong Kong, the University of Iowa, Donghai University in Taichung, and as head of the Fine Arts Research Institute at Tainan National University of the Arts until his retirement in 1999. He has exhibited extensively in China, Taiwan and internationally and is currently based in both Shanghai and Taoyuan, Taiwan.
