One of a group of vertical bird and flowers printed in the tanzaku-shape (narrow vertical), accompanied by poems, (see No. 56.52).  The negative effect against the blue ground suggests the character of a rubbing from stone relief. Ando Tokitaro was born in Edo (Tokyo).  He showed precocious talent as a boy, and studied under Rinsai, a painter of the Kano School.  In 1811 he entered the studio of Toyohiro and in 1812, according to the custom he took a new name, Ichiryusai Hiroshige.  His reputation as a maker of landscape prints was established from around 1830 with the publication of the first Tokaido Series (see No. 56.48).  His immense output of landscape prints in the next twenty years resulted not only from his innate predisposition toward nature and increasing popular interest in this kind of material, but also from the censorship imposed in 1842, which proscribed actor and gaisha prints, and limited the number of color blocks permitted.
