Label CopyIshikawa Shoun was apprenticed at an early age to Iizuka Rokansai (1880-1958), who transcended tradition with his boldly sculptural works. Among Rokansai’s innovations was a unique form of flower basket constructed of wide bamboo strips. While Ishikawa Shoun follows his master by also using wide strips of madake bamboo, Rokansai would leave the bamboo skin intact, whereas Shoun stripped the skin to give his baskets a distinctive appearance and satin-like feel.
