Label CopyBorn in Fukuoka, Hoshino Kayoko moved from Kyushu to Kyoto to study ceramics. She now lives in Shiga with her husband, artist Hoshino Satoru, whose work is also on display in this gallery. Hoshino Kayoko cuts the forms of her sculptures by hand from wedges of her unique blend of several clays, the main ingredient of which is the pebbly material of Shigaraki. She impresses the surfaces with straw rope, using an age-old technique that harkens back to ancient Jomon ceramics. The coating of the sculptures with silvery glaze and the twisting, cut-out forms with sharp edges gives these works a powerful, timeless quality, like that of the mountains and rocks in the Lake Biwa area that inspired her.
