Label CopyIn the nineteenth century, British patrons living in or visiting Bengal commissioned professional artists of Calcutta to make paintings depicting the customs, legends, landscape, architecture and culture of India. This series portrays Ramlila (literally "Rama's play"), devotional performances of the stories of the god Rama that were popular among the Hindus of Calcutta. Painted on blue-tinted European laid paper (with British watermarks), these works also employ western pictorial conventions.
