Label text from Illuminated: The Art of Sacred Books exhibition:

The title page from a Perfection of Wisdom (Prajnaparamita) Sutra manuscript has a green silk curtain that drapes over and protects the paintings when the manuscript is closed. The miniatures of the Buddha (left), Vajradhara (right) and the Sixteen Elders (Arhats) in two rows are painted on an additional layer of black-colored paper with a cut-out frame to accommodate the text lines written on the layer below. The illuminated layer is attached to this multilayered ground with special stitching clips. This treatment of folios is common in Tibetan blue- and black-ground manuscripts.</schema:description><schema:artForm>com.gallerysystems.emuseum.core.entities.Classification@71</schema:artForm><schema:url>https://emuseum.cornell.edu/objects/40658/rdf</schema:url></schema:VisualArtwork></rdf:RDF>
