The vessel is polychrome, with tan and brown paint on a red ground. The human figure wears ear spools, a pig-shaped mask, broad collar with rectangular pendants, and a geometric belt.

This vessel is characteristic of Formative ceramics from the Lambayeque Valley of Peru's North Coast. Chongoyape vessels differ from the better-known Chavin-influenced north coastal Cupisnique wares in their red ground color and polychrome decoration. The figure's eyes are made from clay balls and its arms from strips of rolled clay, which are typical of the Chongoyape style. Incised- line decorations and feline motifs are common in Chavin and Cupisnique wares; Chongoyape and the contemporary Tembladera wares, like the post-firing resin-painted Paracas pottery from the South Coast, are polychrome, with different paint colors carefully applied within the incised lines of the vessel. Later Moche vessels often have similar stirrup-spout human effigy forms but are not incised; their polychrome slip-painted decoration is painted directly on the vessel.
