Label CopyRobert J. Smith, a Cornell alumnus and retired professor of anthropology and Asian studies, first lived in Japan during the American occupation in 1946. With his wife Kazuko, a retired Cornell instructor of Japanese language, he began collecting Japanese art while conducting research in Japan in the early 1960s. The Smiths’ collection reflects their wide-ranging interest in all aspects of Japanese art, from traditional to modern, aristocratic to popular.
