Each has a four-line, seven-character poetic inscription praising the subject which is yet to be transcribed and translated. Signature and seals accompany the inscription. Pictorially, a section of the trunk or main branch--with its knots and textured surface--is the main motif. One or two secondary branches from which additional stems and plum blossoms set forth are depicted to add diagonal, horizontal, or additional upward or downward thrusts to the composition. Flower petals are in black ink, carved outlines in sunk relief are left in white. Different shapes and depths of carving result in the varying textures and tonalities of the tree branches.
