A dark mass of trees crowded with crows and some remaining leaves lean out above the scholar and the bridge. Across the stream to the left and around a path skirting the sloping hill and the river is a wide open, empty pavilion. The pavilion is above the stream in a more or less level clearing surrounded by tall naked trees. More tall trees with bare branches appear half-obscured by mist in the background rising to the uppper right.
