Label CopyAn anthropomorphic rather than literal expression of the exhibition’s figural theme, this fine rooster fixes us with a rather human gaze. Given variously over the years to Jan Joost van Cossiau, Jan Fyt, Pieter Boel, Melchior Hondecoeter, Jean-Baptiste Oudry, and Frans Snyders, this compelling drawing is still seeking a compelling attribution despite intensive research and consultation with experts. Likewise, the sheet’s watermark, a key clue to the drawing’s origin, at present remains unidentified. ("FIGURE/STUDY: Drawings from the Herbert F. Johnson Museum of Art," text by Andrew C.
