The obverse features a left profile bust of the American artist, Gilbert Stuart.  The reverse features an allegorical composition of the female figure of Liberty who is seen atop a set of stairs, crowned with stars and leaning agains a shield.  Two male figures representing the arts of painting and sculpture are seen upon the stairs as Liberty holds out a crown of laurel leaves to place upon their heads.
