The obverse features a man and woman who are seen upon a raft that drifts within the rough waves.  A large clipper ship is seen in the distance as the man begins to raise his hand while holding the woman upright with his other arm.  Beneath is a date as well as an anchor (for hope) and sprig of Rosemary (symbolizing remembrance).  The reverse features the image the figure of Columbia seen seated and crowning the same man seen on the obverse side of the medal with a crown of laurel leaves as he kneels at her feet.  An eagle is seen at Columbia's side, standing upon a shield and Roman fasces.  In the distance, a Clipper ship is seen to the left while to the right, the Capital building in Washington, D.C. is seen, with it's dome.
