Label CopyArthur Dow was brought up in Ipswich, Massachusetts, where he would eventually set up a summer school which he ran from 1891 to 1907. The town and its surrounding dunes and marsh views was the subject of many works, including Bend in the River. Discovering Japanese woodcuts, Dow began to experiment in this medium, and had his first show in 1895 in the Japanese corridor of the Museum of Fine Arts of Boston.
