Nashiji lacquer ground decorated, in low relief gold, with a coiling dragon with flames. Claws inlaid with bits of iridescent mother-of-pearl. On the reverse, an archaic or stylized ideograph inlaid in mother-of-pearl on a dark-brown ground, surrounded by a band of four low-relief gold chrysanthemums on nashiji ground. The narrow side is lacquered with a pattern of overlapping circles equal on all fours sides, known as "shippo" (Seven Treasures) design.
