Label CopyIn Jackie III, Andy Warhol reproduces photographs of Jacqueline Kennedy from newspapers and tabloids following her husband’s assassination in 1963. The work mimics the recurrence of her image in the media following the event, while also serving a similar purpose: through its repetition, Jackie III further mythologizes its subject and allows the image to become her surrogate, enhancing the collective emotion felt for her loss. Jackie III points to Warhol’s fascination with different classes of celebrity and to his own desire to become as famous as they are.
