Label CopyThis work is a continuation of the artist’s larger 1975–76 installation Rhapsody. In both, Bartlett employs categories of universals, such as color and geometry, and modes of painting such as abstraction and representation. Bartlett then combines these categories in different permutations to signify different objects and meanings. The present work is composed of only three sections: house, mountain, and ocean. Here, Bartlett takes basic elements of traditional landscape painting and combine them to create three representations with very different meanings—both the house and the mountain take the same geometric shape to very different symbolic and pictorial ends. -Isabel Malina ("Shifting Ground," curated by undergraduate members of Cornell's History of Art Majors' Society, with oversight by Leah Sweet and Brittany R. R. Rubin, and presented at the Johnson Museum April 21-August 12, 2018)
