This vivid red color was likely produced by using cochineal dyes.  The large figures are woven in shades of cream, tan, gold, pink, and brown.  These colors may well be the natural colors of the undyed fibers rather than the product of different dyestuffs.  The two main figures are bordered along both top and bottom edges with rows of 13 birds woven in shades of red, gold, tan, pink, and brown on a gold ground.  Stripes of plain tan, bronze, and red frame the bird borders on both sides.  A remnant of red fringe remains along the bottomof the panel, while the top of the panel shows signs of having been stitiched to another textile panel originally, perhaps forming a larger garment such as a tunic or shawl.This is a typical example of a warp-faced textile.  Pre-Columbian Peruvian coastal warp-faced textiles often used cotton weft threads and camelid wool warps, since wool takes dyes bettter than does cotton, producing a more vividly-colored and fade-resistant textile.The central figures are clearly fantastic beings, with arms and legs ending in monstrous animal heads.  Each of these heads has a forward-curling crest or horn, open fanged mouth, and protruding toungue.  The central figures wear elaborate headdresses with downcurling plumes over a crescent-shaped foundation.   Such headdresses are common along the Peruvian north coast during Lambayeque and Chimu periods, and the birds are common coastal motifs."},"medium":{"label":"Medium","value":"Cotton or camelid wool and cotton"},"onview":{"label":"On View","value":"0"},"title":{"label":"Title","value":"Slit-woven tapestry panel"},"classification":{"label":"Classifications","value":"Textiles"},"culture":{"label":"Culture","value":"Chimu (Peru)"},"displayDate":{"label":"Date","value":"1000\u20131470"},"id":{"label":"Id","value":"214810"},"dimensions":{"label":"Dimensions","value":"23 x 25 1/4 x 2 inches (58.4 x 64.1 x 5.1 cm)"}}]}
