The carving depicts Guanyin, the Goddess of Mercy, seated on an openwork rock pedestal; her right leg is extended down, left leg bent at the knee. At her feet is a canine figure; in her hands she holds a form of lingzhi (fungus) in the shape of a natural ruyi sceptre. At her elbow is a small table-like extension of the base on which rests a collection of books bound in the Chinese style between hard covers. A hood covers her top-knot; a lotus pendant hangs under her chin.
