In classic porcelain the glaze and body fuse together completely, while in Xing ware the glaze still appears as an applied coating on the vessel. Ewers such as this were used in the preparation of tea. A similar ewer excavated from a tomb at Xi'an dated to 808 is inscribed on its base with the name of the teahouse where it was used."},"invno":{"label":"Object number","value":"86.121.037"},"description":{"label":"Description","value":"MPR #314 Ewer with short spout and grooved handle. Ovoid body tapering to foot, contracted neck with flaring mouth. Strap handle attaches to shoulder and neck. Spout rises up from shoulder. Covered with a white glaze that reflects a blue-green hue in thicker areas collected where the handle joins the body and neck. Of a white clay body, porcelaneous stoneware, glaze stops short of foot which is flat. One minute crack in the glaze on the flared lip edge, located about 30 degrees counterclockwise from the spout. The crack runs vertically down the neck for aobut 1 inch.
