He was a noble of the 19th century, deified as God of Calligraphy and often depicted riding on a black ox, or clasping to his chest a branch of blooming plum trees.  In this painting, Michizane is depicted as a bearded man in traditional Japanese robes, holding in his right hand a slab, beneath his left arm, a sword. Plum blossoms is a symbol of his noblety and, in this case, appears to his upper right. The painting is executed in a very schematized and restrained line (except for the plum trees that are painted in a rather cursive style.)
