Label CopyA member of the Académie des Beaux-Arts in Paris, Bouguereau’s art was highly prized in post–Civil War America, when new fortunes were created overnight and the Grand Tour of Europe was a rite of passage for the upper class. Once sold by the artist, through his French gallerist, to a collector or dealer based in New York or Boston, the paintings tended to remain in the United States.
